Do You Like Who Twitter Says You’re Like?

Who Are Your Social Media Exemplars? Twitter Has Suggestions.
The internet can tell us things we may – or may not – like about ourselves. As one comedian put it, “I googled myself and found out I’m a jerk.” (Or, as Kramer once said on Seinfeld: “Oh my God! My TiVo thinks I’m gay!” Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

So I was more than a little skeptical when Twitter started to tell me who I was like.  What is the algorithm focused on?  If it is hairstyle, I might be like Ben @BernankeFED, or early Sinead O’connor, or @nooneyouknow.

Or would Twitter go for shock value? A secret so well-buried that even I didn’t know it, like: I Heart Celine Dion (@CelineDionNews)?  Or would it just tell me that I’m @nobodyfamous?

Turns out the keepers of the Fail Whale say I’m like three people I like.

  • Ann Handley She co-founded ClickZ, an early interactive marketing site, and built the Marketing Profs community. Being chief content officer of Marketing Profs is like being the head baker at @DancingDeer Baking. It’s running the part of the firm that creates value, branding and fun. Our hidden connection: We both cut our teeth in dead-tree publishing.
  • Christopher Penn No, not the guy in Reservoir Dogs.  This Chris Penn is co-founder  of Podcamp, a hub for and incubator of social media in Boston.  I’ve enjoyed being a speaker there for a few years, and earlier in my career had the formative experience of directing the Boston Computer  Societies 70 chapters and its magazines – which were also hubs and incubators of online community.  Our hidden connection: I also didn’t appear in Reservoir Dogs.
  • Rachel Levy Rachel is also an email marketer (IMN I Make News) and she founded a webinar promotion service.  We’re both out there speaking about business and marketing, and it seems like every few months we run across each other at one gathering or another. Our hidden connection: We both went to school in Chicago. Subtle, Twitter, very subtle.

Now if I could only get My Heart Will Go On to stop playing in my head.

Can you complete this list?
Here’s a challenge. There is a fourth name on this list, which fits right in with these three. I have a prize which is just barely worth the effort, (okay, it’s boutique chocolate from a local firm) for anyone who nails it, or who bests Twitter with a smarter, funnier choice. It would be great to hear your guess, or who inspires your use of social media.

Have a Happy Friend Friday!

I like the pattern, thanks! @SteveHall would be a great add. Founder of AdRants (I blog on bad airport advertising) and Marketing Vox too. This beats Twitter’s guess — which I’ll post Monday — so my first package of chocolate goes to my exemplar with the sharp glasses!

I’ve narrowed it down to @theSunQueen, @dough or @amandapalmer. By the way, Who Shot Nice Guy Eddie? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRwxjaLzKIc

Wow, John Eckman just nails this one cold. Sir, you’re like a human ouija board. Are there any other super powers we should know about? Chris Brogan is the fourth social media personality that Twitter says I’m like. So, how did you get this?? Are we obviously similar, or did you somehow triangulate off the other three? Congrats, glad to direct vegan goodies your way! ;>

Triangulated based on the other three – plus I’ve found it’s a rare question about social media / marketing / community in Boston that doesn’t have Brogan as one possible answer. 😉
